POPCAN DRIVE

The FUMC Youth will be holding a can/bottle drive on Sunday, February 12 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the church garage on 4^th Street. Proceeds from the drive will go toward the youth mission trip this summer. Call Katie or Brian Bishop at 641-828-6933 if you need someone to pick up your cans.

The Youth are beginning to plan a mini-mission trip to Chicago for Memorial Day weekend. All 7th to 12th grade students are invited to participate. However, only those youth that actively participate in Youth Group and the planning and fundraising of the trip will be allowed to go. If you are interested in learning more about the trip, plan to attend Youth Group on February 12th.

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING

On Sunday, February 5 the FUMC youth will again be collecting donations for Helping Hands. Please bring non-perishable food or cash donations that will go directly to Helping Hands. Members of the Youth Group will be doing a special collection on this morning.

IUMF College Scholarships available

The Iowa United Methodist Foundation offers a number of scholarship opportunities to college-bound Iowa Methodists. Methodist scholarships exist to assist members of the faith in attending college and achieving their educational goals. Applications and criteria are currently available at www.iumf.org. Applications and all required material must be postmarked no later than March 15, 2012 to be eligible.

Winter Jam will be held at Wells Fargo Arena on Friday, January 20. If any Youth are interested in attending let Katie and Brian know. Tickets are $10 at the door. Some of the artists included this year are Toby Mac and Third Day.

UNICEF PARTY

The UNICEF Party was held October 30 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. in West Fellowship Hall. Everyone enjoyed the activities of games, crafts, snacks, and most importantly trick-or-treating for UNICEF.

The kids went around town during the party and collected donations and with the help of the church over $500 was raised to purchase a well for a community with out good drinking water. .

FALL/WINTER YOUTH GROUP SCHEDULE

The youth group camping trip was postponed in September but the group has rescheduled the event for Saturday, October 15 through Sunday, October 16. All youth in 7th through 12th grade are invited to attend and bring friends. We will be camping at the Marion County Sportsman’s Club. Dude, It’s All About Jesus…

On those hot summer days the best place to be is the beach! As kids explore the wonders of the beach, they’ll also discover the Big Answers to the Big Questions about Jesus, who He is and why they need Him. At SonSurf Beach Bash VBS, kids learn that there is only one truth: Jesus.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS) for area youth will be held July 24 through July 28 from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m at the First United Methodist Church.

Come early !! for a FREE MEAL FOR THE FAMILY AT 5:30 PM with VBS starting at 6:00 pm. Please sign up early so that meal plans can be made, materials ordered, and special plans can be made for this great event. For more information please contact the church or check out the FUMC website.

Summer Youth Program

The kids will be out of school soon! Do they need some supervised activities for the summer starting in June?

Problem solved the Summer Youth Program will fill those needs meeting week days and providing some FUN, COOL and not boring activities. Never too late to join in

SUMMER YOUTH INTERNS
The Education Cluster would like to take this opportunity to introduce the Summer Youth Interns. Jessica Wallace and Lydia Jahner are the interns for this summer and they will be planning children and youth activities throughout the summer months. Jessica is a junior at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa where she is majoring in Elementary Education with an emphasis in reading and early childhood education. Lydia is a junior at Central College in Pella, Iowa where she is majoring in Russian and Political Science. Both young women have a strong background in leadership and child development activities. They are a blessing to the church, so be sure to thank them as you see them this summer.

We invite the K thru 2nd graders to come from 9 - 10 am for the Explorers Club.
The Kid’s Club 3^rd thru 5^th will meet from 10:30-12 noon

The Summer Youth Groups which make up both groups will meet from 6:30 -8pm

Tim won the 3200 at the Panthers Relays on Saturday and the Knoxville Panthers won the meet running away from the rest. Congratuations to Tim and the team.

Salt & Light Company Meeting

On Sunday, April 3 from 4-6 pm the Salt & Light Company will be having their regular meeting. Youth in 6th to 12th grade are encouraged to attend. This will be a fun time for youth to get together and learn about God.

Knoxville wanted to out do last years $12,000 total during their Coaches vs. Cancer event Saturday night. Mission accomplished as Knoxville stepped up and helped raise over $24,000 for the American Cancer Society. According to Church member Angie Utiermarkt, the total will likely go higher when they figure in admission and concession stand money. Over 1,500 people came out to the event that started with alumni basketball games, and silent auction during the basketball games. Knoxville lost both games to Carlisle.

Former Knoxville Basketball Standout Lacy Stevenson has had a large impact both on the court for DMACC as well as in the classroom. In a recent game against Ellsworth, Stevenson led the Bears to a 70-37 victory scoring 19 points and drilling 5/7 three point shots. Stevenson was also named the International Association of Conference Center Administrators Scholar Athlete of the Week. In her first semester DMACC she earned a three-point-three/three grade point average majoring in Agriculture Administration.

Over $1,000 has been raised and over 200 blankets were purchased for distribution by Church World Services during our recent blanket Sunday. Blankets are used for warmth, to carry belongings, for shade, tents, and beds. Your colored drawings in the hall are great and look like they did make a difference providing 200 blankets for families to share.

Week 3 and 4!

Hot Days + A bucket of water= Tons of fun :)

The last two weeks have been great!!! We are now up to 39 kids who have participated in at least one of our sessions!! This number is so exciting! We would love to keep growing in number, so if you have any friends that would like to join us, please bring them along!! We are planning a lock-in for middle school and high school students on Sunday, July 11 from 7pm to 7am Monday morning. Remember, we are more than happy to help out with rides to or from church, so please let us know! We are organizing a fun, day activity for the K-5 group so watch for an update about that! This week's lesson (for those who are interested) will be on honesty! We can all use a little reminder about how important it is to be honest. As always, we'll have a bunch of fun games and activities planned, also! Oh, and don't forget about snacks! :) Can't wait for another great week! Check out the pictures below from our sidewalk chalk adventure and more! :)

Week 2

Hey guys and gals! We have had such a great second week! We switched times around to put the two younger groups together because of low numbers, and guess what?! We had SIXTEEN kids in those two age groups alone! That doubled last week's numbers!!! We had a good time learning about friendship in our younger group on Monday and goals on Tuesday with the Youth Group. Wednesday was full of heat and fun at Auld Park. We cooled off with a water balloon fight (which the girls obviously won :)) Then, after a few games of "toilet tag", we headed back.

We are going to continue to keep the Explorers coming from 1-3 on Monday with the Kids Club for this week. We thought it went really well last week, so we'll keep that up! Also, parents, don't forget to sign a consent form next week if you have not already done so! When we do our bigger activities on Wednesday night and sometimes drive, we have to have those in order to take the kids!

We are hoping to do a service project with the older group very soon, so be watching for an update on that, too! Kids in Youth Group: Please be thinking of any service projects you may be interested in! We are open to any suggestions!

Thanks to all the parents for all of the rides given, and remember, if there is ever a time that we could assist you in giving your child a ride, please don't hesitate to call! My number is on all emails sent out. Also, if you are reading this thinking, "I'm not getting any emails," email us at FUMCyouth2010@gmail.com, and let us know that you'd like to be put on our list! Kickoff Update

Here's an update from our first week of our new summer youth program.

Our kickoff was a great success!! We had sixteen kids from ages six to seventeen. We played a water relay game, the human knot, and log line up. The kids seemed to really enjoy spending time with others their own age and even taking care of some of the younger kids.

We encourage everyone to join us and bring your friends!!! Don't forget that we have started our regular meeting times which are:

Explorers (K-2): Monday 9-11

Kids Club (3-5): Monday 1-3

Youth Group (6-12): Tuesday 1-3

Everyone: Wednesday 6:30-8

Hope to see you all tomorrow night when we all come together!! Thanks for a great start to our program!
